He was with Khomeini during the fights against the Shah Regime. Then he became second to Khomeini after the revolution. He would be the leader of the country after the death of Khomeini if he had just kept his mouth shut and had not continued criticizing Khomeini. He did not hesitate criticizing Khomeini when necessary. The peak of his criticisms was in 1989 when hundreds of Iranian youth were being executed by Khomeini's regime every day. As a result of challenging Khomeini on that, he was disapproved by Khomeini. After the death of Khomeini, he was practically put on house arrest by Ali Khamenei's for about 20 years.

In recent years, Montazeri directly challenged the regime and was becoming a serious threat to the regime. He was the moral support for the people and their struggle against the regime.

I never thought that I would ever shed tears for a cleric, but I did today and was saddened for the loss of this man; man of dignity and high principles. I pay my sincere respect to this man and will forever remember him as a man who did not sell his dignity in exchange of being in power.

There are many other issues that are my main concerns; Violation of human rights and Iranian regime's fight against peoples' desire for democracy in Iran are my main concerns. I don't give a damn what he says about holocaust. The Zionists keep using it so much that it has become more like "holocaust industry", so to make sure no one dares to criticize Israel. And Ahmadinejad talks about it because he knows that by using it he can distract the world's attention from more tangible issues such as Iranian peoples' struggle against the regime. But what western countries do is nothing but kissing Israel's ass, again.

Let's say, the idiot fake president of Iran stops talking about Israel and holocaust, or even decides to become friend with Israel (another criminal and internationally hated regime); Let's say, the Iranian regime decides that Iran is stopping all its nuclear activities and is going to be friend with the rest of the world. Then what? Then, I am sure most of the concerns and conflicts with the west will go away. Why? Because western leaders don't give a damn about Iranian people and their struggle with this regime.

That's why nothing should be tied to Iran's policies towards Israel, holocaust and/or Iran's nuclear activities. Otherwise, west will once again exchange integrity with its interests and Western interests are not necessarily in line with Iranian peoples' basic interests. So in short, screw the west. Yes, Iran is at a critical point of its history. This may be the beginning of an end for the regime in Iran. Do I want them to fall in a violent way? I am not sure. But there is one thing I am sure about: they will not fall easily. I know that this would be very costly to the country and to my people.

The regime in Iran will not hesitate to commit any crime, any massacre of the public in order to be in power for a bit longer. There will be no limit to, to what extend they are willing to go in cracking down any voice of opposition. They are simply ruthless and will go as far as it takes regardless of the cost to people of Iran. My feeling says that they should go as fast as possible but hey, I am here in the other side of the world in Vancouver, Canada. It is easy for me to subscribe peoples' action against the regime. I'll be safe, but my people will not.

Perhaps one other option is for the regime to remain in power, but begin to fade out. This may have more gradual impact to the change, but at least fewer people will die.

Let me put it this way: If we agree that they do have their followers in the country. If we agree that, at least 5% of people are their followers. If we agree that from that 5%, 1% are true followers who act based on nothing but religious beliefs, and if we agree that when there is a question of religion, humanity takes the back seat, then we have to agree that 1% of the population: 700,000 dumb idiots will act fearlessly and will do anything to save their "religion"; anything! Even if that means killing thousands of people. Now, let's see how easy it is to kill! Imagine only one of these idiots, equipped with all kind of weapons decides to go to one of the busy parts of the city, take his weapons out and kill as many as possible. After all, he sees them all as the enemies of his religion who were not loyal to the leadership. Now, multiply this by 700,000. Too much? Ok! 500,000. No? Let’s say 50,000. Yes, they can devastate lives.

Having said this, I have to admit that we, who live in outside of the country have no right to tell the people in Iran how to deal with this regime. It will turn out that we are behind the people, by miles. Let them lead us. Let's only support what they choose to do.

It is a critical time and the regime has shown that they are very capable of using unpleasant events to their benefits. In first couple of years after the revolution, Iran was perhaps one of (If not the) most democratic countries in the world. Despite the wishes of the regime and its leaders, people kept pushing for their legitimate demands. But there was no crack down. There couldn't be. Until, Iraq (with the help and encouragement from most of the western countries) attacked Iran and the war began. That was nothing but a gift to the ever weakening regime to use the war as an excuse to crack down on peoples' rights and demands. In short, that war solidified the regime in Iran; other wise the regime would have been long gone by now (I have written about this before).

Now similar situation can do the same for the regime. There should be no doubt that religious rights, from all religions, feed each other in the time of need. This is despite their publicly opposing each other: Republicans in the US, Israeli regime and the regime in Iran. They have always helped each other (I have also written about this before). There should be no doubt that, for instance, Israel would love to see Ahmadinejad in power in Iran. This would allow Israel to put more pressure on the Obama's US to be harsher on Iran. Now, the nightmare will happen if Israel used the opportunity to attack Iran's, say, nuclear facilities. This will not kill the regime, but it will allow it to use it, just like what they did with Iraq war, to once agian consolidate their grip on power and crack down on people's rights. This is of course coupled with the unfortunate fact that such an attack can change priorities of many decent people as well and as a result, weaken the movement.

So, I am just hoping such an attack does not happen, otherwise, my country's prosperity will be once again delayed and who knows for how long. And then, I for one, will more than ever hate the criminal leaders.

Erasing Israeli actions to fault only Hamas

The Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip that began in late December have reportedly killed over 500 Palestinians, many of them civilians and children. As is often the case, U.S. corporate media's presentation of the events leading up to this dramatic escalation in violence have laid the blame for the violence mostly with Hamas, whose rocket attacks on Israel are often cited as the cause for the current Israeli attacks.

In many media discussions about the events that led to the fighting, emphasis is placed on Hamas' decision in late December to allow a cease-fire agreement with Israel to expire, or the group's failure to adequately suppress rocket attacks into Israel during the cease-fire.

A USA Today timeline (1/5/09) explained, "In November, the truce frays as Hamas rockets continue to land in Israel, which closes several border crossings and kills militants building tunnels Hamas was using to smuggle weapons and other goods into Gaza." On NBC Nightly News (12/27/08), Martin Fletcher explained that "a six-month truce ended this week and Palestinians fired rockets into Israel, as many as 60 a day. Israeli leaders said enough is enough."

A Washington Post editorial (12/28/08) announced that Hamas "invited the conflict by ending a six-month-old ceasefire," while Post columnist Richard Cohen (1/6/09) was much blunter: "It took no genius to see the imminence of war. It takes real stupidity to blame it on Israel."

The Dallas Morning News (12/30/08) agreed emphatically in an editorial titled, "Blood on Hamas' Hands": "The pictures of the civilian victims of Israeli airstrikes--especially children--are heart-rending. But let's keep straight whose fault this tragedy is: Hamas, the fanatical Islamists who rule Gaza and who have used the land as a launching pad for firing rockets into Israel."

The New York Times' December 28 lead declared, "The Israeli Air Force on Saturday launched a massive attack on Hamas targets throughout Gaza in retaliation for the recent heavy rocket fire from the area." The next day, Times reporter Stephen Farrell asked (12/29/08), "Why did Hamas end its six-month cease-fire on December 19?" He argued that the "rejectionist credo" of Hamas made this step all but inevitable.

These accounts fail on several grounds. For starters, the cease-fire agreement from June through mid-December was credited by many for ratcheting down the violence--rocket fire into Israel dropped significantly and claimed no Israeli lives during the truce. (Prior to that, rocket and mortar attacks since the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in late 2005 had killed 10 Israelis-theisraelproject.org.) After the cease-fire expired, rocket attacks increased, though no Israelis were killed until after the Israeli attacks were launched; four have been killed since then (Agence France-Presse, 1/6/09).

Interestingly, as the truce expired, the New York Times published an article (12/19/08) that began with a typical corporate media formulation-- Palestinians are attacking, Israel is retaliating-- before noting that Hamas was "largely successful" in curtailing rocket fire into Israel: "Hamas imposed its will and even imprisoned some of those who were firing rockets. Israeli and United Nations figures show that while more than 300 rockets were fired into Israel in May, 10 to 20 were fired in July, depending on who was counting and whether mortar rounds were included. In August, 10 to 30 were fired, and in September, 5 to 10."

The Times article, by Ethan Bronner, noted that what Hamas expected in return from the Israelis never arrived:

But the goods shipments, while up some 25 to 30 percent and including a mix of more items, never began to approach what Hamas thought it was going to get: a return to the 500 to 600 truckloads delivered daily before the closing, including appliances, construction materials and other goods essential for life beyond mere survival. Instead, the number of trucks increased to around 90 from around 70.

Bronner also added that "Israeli forces continued to attack Hamas and other militants in the West Bank, prompting Palestinian militants in Gaza to fire rockets," which produced Hamas response attacks. The Times continued:

While this back-and-forth did not topple the agreement, Israel's decision in early November to destroy a tunnel Hamas had been digging near the border drove the cycle of violence to a much higher level. Israel says the tunnel could have been dug only for the purpose of trying to seize a soldier, like Cpl. Gilad Shalit, the Israeli held by Hamas for the past two and a half years. Israel's attack on the tunnel killed six Hamas militants, and each side has stepped up attacks since.

This straightforward recitation of events is rarely heard in much of the rest of the media coverage of the violence in Gaza--including in the Times, since Israel began its full-scale assault. But for many consumers of U.S. media, history is made irrelevant; a Time magazine piece (1/12/09) began:

Two sounds dominate the lives of Israelis living near Gaza: the wail of a siren and, 25 seconds later, the whistling screech of an incoming rocket fired by the Palestinian militant group Hamas. That gives Israeli families just enough time to dive for cover-even as they pray the rocket will miss.

At 11:30 a.m. on December 27, a new sound filled the azure Mediterranean sky: the rolling boom of Israeli bombs and missiles slamming into Gaza.

Israeli airstrikes in Gaza are anything but "new," but presenting them as such--and pairing that presentation with an Israeli family sheltered against an incoming Hamas rocket--gives a wildly misleading impression of a conflict where the deaths and suffering are overwhelmingly on the Palestinian side.

20 years ago on July 3rd, the US navy warship, USS Vincenne fired a missile and shot down an Iranian Passenger airplane which was on its routine corridor from Iran to United Arab Emarats over the waters of the Persian Gulf killing all the 298 civilian passengers, many of whom children. Of course, last evening another Israeli dog was there making her "loyalty" barks to her masters in Israel. This person was nobody bust the opportunist, and disgusting Hillary Clinton. But I thought Obama was going to be different, but he sure failed to be. Such a shame!

Hamas's resistance is not "symbolic" for the Israelis living in southern Israel. Take Osher Twito. This eight year-old boy can no longer walk because shrapnel from a rocket explosion severed his left leg, which had to be amputated.
Sderot was once a city of 24,000 people. These "homemade rockets" have forced close to 5,000 people to relocate elsewhere in Israel over the past seven years.
Although the weaponry of Palestinian terror groups may be crude and inexpensive, it has wreaked devastation for the Israelis in this region, as any advanced military weaponry would.
I know this may be difficult to believe based on the way Israel is presented in the Arab world, but the Israeli army does not intend nor want to kill innocent Palestinian women and children.

It is very difficult to target Palestinian terrorists when they use women and children as human shields. Hamas times its rocket fire so that Jewish children will be the most likely targets. It fires Qassam rockets early in the morning when they go to school and in the afternoon when their parents pick them up.
This "symbolic" war by Hamas is not being waged solely against our soldiers, but
against us - the Jewish people.
You say your family originally came from Ashkelon. I am curious, where did your great-great-great grandparents originally come from? How long had they been here? I too have family who weredisplaced. My grandmother left Poland because of the growing fear of Nazi control. She managed to escape to Israel but her entire family was killed in the Holocaust before they could join her. She never went back to Poland.

I think the term "terrorism" is connected to a level of sophistication in the weapons used. If we had had advanced weaponry, this whole thing would have been managed differently. It would have become a war between two nations - with no mention of terrorism.
Another point, what do you call the prevention of food and medical supplies entering the Gaza Strip? Is this not a kind of terrorism?
Peace is always possible everywhere if attention is paid to it, and if rights are returned to people who have lost them. I believe in peace, as we are exchanging letters. I think peace is what makes us human. You, the Jew, and I, the Arab Muslim, are humans, so there is place for peace.
But can you tell me why Israel closes the borders and prevents people from travelling?

The above mosaic was taken from a "progressive" American site named The Huffington Post. It correctly reminds its readers about the American casualties of war and indicates those who are responsible for it. But even this so-called progressive American site does not touch on the fact that, as sad and tragic as it is, if these 4000 US soldiers who willingly travelled thousands of miles to another country to participate in the invasion of that country have been killed, there have also been more than a million innocent Iraqis, who did not choose the situation they were in, who have also been killed because of this criminal invasion.

How could they note 4000, but practically ignore over a million? Perhaps if they had included little squares for each of the casualties of this war, then the resolution of the mosaic would be much higher and it would be more imaginable (for those who are strangers to the concept of numbers) that the number of 4000 US casualties is insignificant compare to the number of dead Iraqis.

If the progressive Americans are so ignorant at best, and arrogant at worst, can be so racist, then what could be expected from other more ordinary Americans? Really!

Civilian deaths are indefensible by any excuse

I am sure you have heard so many times that Israelis do not intentionally kill Palestinian civilians when attacking Palestinian cities, but Palestinians deliberately kill Israeli civilians. In short, this nothing but bullshit from the Israeli fascists. Just looking at the numbers and the proportion of Palestinian to Israeli civilian deaths should be sufficient to realize how these animals are committing crimes against humanity. Having said that, today, a letter published in Toronto Star drew my attention. You know, most letters criticizing Israel, do not get published in most of the media outlets, even Toronto Star which is fairly more balanced compared to many papers, do not publish many letters, including any of my at least 12 letters in last two weeks. So, I was pleasantly surprised to see the letter that I saw today. The letter nicely sums it up:

Alan Baker, the Israeli ambassador to Canada, finds that "no reasonable people can be expected to suffer constant, daily barrages of missiles and the deliberate murder of its civilians without the right to defend itself."
Does he think that the daily sonic booms and far-deadlier attacks by Apache gunships, Merkava tanks, naval vessels and F-16 fighter jets are not "indiscriminate," do not "terrorize a civilian population" and are "not merely illegal and immoral, but ... a violation of the most basic norms and principles of international law"? Does he think they do not constitute "a war crime of the first dimension, going against all accepted norms of civilization"?
The current high ratio of Palestinian to Israeli deaths belies the mantra that Israel doesn't target civilians. Israel does target civilians and civilian infrastructure. How else could one explain the deaths of so many children, and the destruction of hospitals, schools and homes?
"Defending itself" does not release Israel from its obligation to take all feasible precautions to minimize harm to civilians and civilian property during military operations. Israel has been acting outside the rule of law with impunity for far too long. The illegal occupation of Arab lands, targeted assassinations – effectively acting as prosecutor, judge and jury in a secret process where the death sentence can't be appealed – and collective punishment are all violations of international and humanitarian law.
It is ironic that Baker invokes the importance of international law for Palestinians, while seemingly putting Israel high above it. Civilian deaths, be they Israeli or Palestinian, must be condemned with the same vigour; human beings must be treated equally in death as in life. This is the only way to maintain our humanity and that of the victims, and to ensure that a just peace can be achieved.

By showing a photo of Barack Obama in a Kenyan traditional attire, Hillary Clinton and The Republicans tried to connect Obama to Islam. Now, they say that they have deleted the photo because "Now" they know that it is a Somali tribal garb, not Islamic. Well, the fact remains that these bastards have all the ill-intentions in their dirty typical undignified US politics, but what if the dress was actually an Islamic dress? So what? What about the US politicians who one by one go to Israel and kiss Israeli butts with the intention of proving to their Israeli masters how loyal dogs they are to Israel. How about them who, obviously without problems, put on the Jewish hat, whatever it is called!? How come no one makes a fuss about that?

Back in July of 2004, I had a short post about Rumsfeld and his absence after the embarrassments caused by the exposed American rorture practices in Iraq. It was titled "Where is Rumsfeld?"

Now, a visitor of my blog has left a comment on the same post and rightfully requested this discussion be revived. Here is the comment:

I know that the date on this post is quite old, but I'd like to revive the pondering. WHERE IS RUMSFELD? And I'm not speaking "geographically", rather what is he doing, who is he meeting with, etc.
I'd like to revive this conversation because his whereabouts and acts could be a precursor to what happens with Bush, Cheney and other cabinet members.Is there a fear of war crimes among administration members? Which appears to be true based on Bush's push to amend the War Crimes Act. Why has the media forgotten about Rumsfeld? He was a catalyst in our current affairs affecting not only Americans but others around the world. We should be discussing his future, so that we can have a precedent regarding the futures of Bush, Cheney and others. These people should NOT be forgotten, because they highlight for us the people to avoid in the future - who we vote for, and who we don't.PLEASE KEEP TALKING - MAKE THIS NEWS WORTHY.
